10.2 Nonconformity and corrective action

When a nonconformity occurs, the organization shall:

  1. react to the nonconformity and, as applicable:
    • take action to control and correct it;
  • deal with the consequences, including mitigating adverse environmental impacts;
  1. evaluate the need for action to eliminate the cause(s) of the nonconformity, in order that it does not recur or occur elsewhere, by:
    • reviewing the nonconformity;
    • determining the cause(s) of the nonconformity;
    • determining if similar nonconformities exist, or can potentially occur;
  2. implement any action needed;
  3. review the effectiveness of any corrective action taken;
  4. make changes to the environmental management system, if

Corrective actions shall be appropriate to the significance of the effects of the nonconformities encountered, including their environmental impact(s).

Documented information shall be available as evidence of:

  • the nature of the nonconformities and any subsequent actions taken;
  • the results of any corrective

10.3 Continual improvement

The organization shall continually improve the suitability, adequacy and effectiveness of the environmental management system to enhance environmental performance.

10.2: The former 2015 Clause 10.2 is renumbered from 10.2 to 10.3 following removal of the separate “General” clause. The visible corrective-action requirements remain substantively the same, with editorial changes such as singular/plural flexibility for “cause(s).”
